How all races but mankind refer to the world beneath their feet and its soil. It is used in place of where we would use "earth" in all common speech.
Example: Bits of drey fell from his filthy hands as he looked over the farmscape. It was hardly high-sun, and already it had been a long day.
Example 2: She stood frozen on the drey, struck by a fear like she'd never felt in her lifetime.
